The Foton Tornadoes kept the Amy’s Kitchen-Perpetual winless after giving them a straight-set beating, 25-14, 25-7, 25-18, in the 2016 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference women’s volleyball tournament at the Cuneta Astrodome today.
Foton head coach Vilet Ponce-De Leon showed satisfaction with her team’s performance.
“We’re just happy kasi ‘yung mga pinaghandaan namin na gagawin namin, na-translate naman nung mga bata hanggang matapos ‘yung last play,” said Ponce-De Leon.
After a lopsided opening set which Foton led all the way, they were even more lethal in the second, leading 16-4 coming into the second technical timeout. The Lady Spikers’ four points came only from three service errors by the Tornadoes and a lone attack by Cindy Imbo.
Foton, then, unleashed a 9-3 run highlighted by Jaja Santiago’s individual five-point run off three quick attacks and two blocks to finish the set, 25-7.
The 6’3″ middle spiker led the game in scoring, with 15 off 12 attacks and three blocks. She was also the lone player to reach a double digit output in scoring.
Unlike the earlier sets, Amy’s Kitchen put up more of a fight in the final set, trailing only by two early, 7-9. Then, Foton relied on its hitters EJ Laure, Carol Ann Cerveza and team captain Angeli Araneta to close the set, 25-18, and the match for them.
Laure, Cerveza and Araneta combined for 14 points for the Tornadoes, most of which came in the third set.
Meanwhile, no Lady Spiker scored in double digits. Team captain Cindy Imbo and Maribeth Lara were their top scorers with six apiece.
Coach Vilet moved experimented with her chess pieces in the game as all her players had playing time.
“We have to see all possibilities and combinations. Pinakita lang nu’ng mga bata how well they can adapt du’n sa mga changes na ibibigay namin sa kanila,” closed a satisfied Ponce-De Leon.
