While the world tries to contain COVID-19, ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera is preparing himself for the next phase of his life.
The charismatic 42-year-old and his wife Jessica have been busying themselves on their farm in Guam, where the lovely couple are expecting their first-born this July.
“Farm life on Guam,” Vera said when asked about what keeps him busy during the lockdown.
“I have been waking up early before the chickens and working on clearing the farm since we have a lot of time, and stocking, clearing, cutting, digging, and dumping junk that was dumped on our property before we owned it. I am also getting plans together to build a barn-gym facility for personal use.”
Vera realizes that he will become a father soon, and having done it all in the world of martial arts over nearly two decades, “The Truth” cannot hide his excitement.
“I didn’t realize how excited I would be and it increases every day and it does not stop,” Vera said.
“It is like going unlimited, Super Saiyan mode, without all the screaming. I look forward to hanging out with my son and seeing if I can mold him into a better man than I could ever think of becoming.”
Always the type of athlete to come into his matches prepared, Vera is approaching fatherhood the same way. And since he has spent a lot of time with his young family members, he believes he knows what to expect – and he promises to raise his son to the very best of his abilities.
“I’ve been preparing for fatherhood my whole life with my nephews, nieces, and family,” Vera said.
“We have just been making plans and need to follow through when the time comes, from the hospital bag all the way to helping our son grow as a self-contributing member to society in an amazing way and asking everyone questions.”
The couple initially wanted to give birth in Vera’s home country in the Philippines, but the recent pandemic forced them to make some necessary changes.
“Jessica is due for July 29, but with the COVID-19 quarantine we have been making emergency plans to give birth in Guam, even though our initial plan was to give birth in the Philippines.”
With the birth of his first born, a blossoming movie career in the Philippines, and an upcoming match with Arjan “Singh” Bhullar, 2020 will be a busy year for Vera.
The pandemic might have shifted a few of his plans, but the jovial World Champion is still hopeful that things will normalize before the end of the year.
“We were hoping [to release a film] by the end of the year, but COVID-19 has changed everyone’s plans. So please just stay tuned with my upcoming films and title defense.”
