Yeng Guiao on missing coaching duties: ‘Team is playing better without me’

Playing without head coach Yeng Guiao isn’t new after all for Rain or Shine.

The fiery mentor was stuck in traffic for five hours and arrived to the game in time for the second half. Guiao chose not to coach and instead let his deputy mentor Caloy Garcia finish the job.

The Elasto Painters held on to take a 102-95 win over the Alaska Aces in Game 2 to level the series at 1-1 apiece.

“I was monitoring the game on radio and also on the internet through live stream. That’s the best thing I could do because I was on the road for five hours,” Guiao told Tiebreaker Times.

“But I’m not worried because I have faith in my team. The players and the coaching staff know the system, which is already in place and they did a great job.”

For Guiao, seeing his Rain or Shine team playing without him calling the shots was a joy to watch.

“In fact, they play better without me,” he added. “I got ejected before. I missed games due to suspension and I also came in late due to traffic. But they’ve been doing a great job even without me.”

Guiao will assume coaching responsibility and he believes the series might go the full route, which would be more advantageous to his squad.
