Thailand exhibited its strong form after cruising to a straight-set sweep over Canada, 25-19, 25-22, 26-24, in the curtain-opener of Week 2 of the FIVB Volleyball Nations League, Tuesday afternoon, at the SMART Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Canada began the contest on the wrong foot after committing 10 total errors in the opening set. The Thais made sure to capitalize on their opponents’ lapses as they secured the first set by way of a 25-19 decision.
Pimpichaya Kokram then sustained Thailand’s momentum in the second set after producing six points of her own en route to a 25-22 victory.
Shannon Winzer’s squad fought hard in the third set but a block at the net by Bamrungsuk Hattaya sealed the game for her team with a 26-24 win.
“Just like the last time we played the Philippines, we prepared for the Canada team,” claimed Pimpichaya with the help of a translator. “In our team, we play as we can and try our best.”
Pimpichaya led Thailand with 21 points while Chatchu-On Moksri dropped 17 markers along with two service aces.
Thatdao Neukjang failed to see action in this game after getting injured due to her collision with teammate Supattra Pairoj back in their Week 1 tilt against Belgium.
“I think we’re all a little bit disappointed with how we showed up today. We have a lot more that we can give and Thailand is a good team,” said Alexa Gray. “I guess we needed to fight a little bit further.”
Kiera Van Ryk bannered Canada with 20 points on 17 hits while Gray chipped in 13 points on 12 attacks in a losing effort.
Both teams shall next play on June 16, Thursday, at the SMART Araneta Coliseum. Thailand (4-1) will take on Poland (3-1) at 11:00 AM while Canada (2-4) will aim to bounce back against Belgium (1-3) afterward at 3:00 PM.
