De La Salle University avenged its shocking first-round loss to the University of the East with a dominant 74-46 victory to kick off its UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Women’s Basketball second-round campaign on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Back on September 22, the Lady Warriors stunned the Lady Archers 65-47, ending a 40-game skid dating back to Season 82.
With that in mind, La Salle came out of the gates on fire, doubling UE’s output in the opening quarter, 24-12, before extending its lead to 50-27 at halftime.
Although UE managed to cut its deficit to within 16 late in the third quarter, 37-53, La Salle answered back with 14 straight points.
It established an insurmountable 30-point advantage early in the fourth frame, 67-37.
“For us, we’re just looking at correcting our mistakes. Things that we did wrong, the habits we had nung first round, we just want to correct them,” said De La Salle head coach Cholo Villanueva.
“It’s like that in anything that you do – you make mistakes, you correct them, and then you build good habits from those.”
The victory improved the Lady Archers’ record to 2-6, tying them with the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws – who earlier stunned Adamson University, 67-64 – for sixth and seventh places.
Tricia Mendoza top-scored for La Salle with 15 points, along with five rebounds and two blocks. Meanwhile, Bernice Paraiso added 13 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals, shooting 5-of-6 from the field.
Arabell Bacierto and Luisa San Juan also contributed 12 points apiece for the Lady Archers.
La Salle will look to build on this win when it matches up with Adamson University next Saturday at 6:00 PM at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion (QPav).
Moana Vacalares had 12 points and four turnovers as the Lady Warriors fell to 1-7 at the bottom of the standings.
Rachel Lacayanga contributed 11 points, six rebounds, and five steals, while Kamba Kone added nine points and 10 rebounds.
UE will next face FEU on October 20, also at the UST QPav.
