UAAP: Limited information received, full investigation needed to make sanctions

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines has called on concerned authorities to conduct a “speedy and thorough” investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Ateneo de Manila University student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili, stressing that only limited official information has so far been relayed to the league.

As the UAAP continues to mourn the passing of the two Ateneo athletes on June 8, 2026, in Dipaculao, Aurora, the league reiterated its deepest condolences to their families, loved ones, teammates, coaches, and the entire Ateneo community, describing the tragedy as a profound loss for Philippine collegiate sports.

“We stand in solidarity with all those grieving this profound loss and join them in honoring the memory of two young lives taken too soon,” the league said, as it underscored its continued coordination with concerned institutions while awaiting verified findings.

The UAAP emphasized that it will fully consider the results of ongoing investigations conducted by the National Bureau of Investigation, the Philippine National Police–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, the Commission on Higher Education, and the concerned member school, noting that it has yet to receive complete and conclusive details needed for a formal determination.

“We urge all concerned agencies to conduct a speedy and thorough investigation in order to put all speculations to rest,” the league added, stressing the importance of clarity and due process amid public concern surrounding the incident.

The league said it continues to closely monitor all developments and will carefully evaluate all findings once these become available. Upon completion of the investigations, all relevant information will be presented to the seven other member universities for a comprehensive and fair review.

The UAAP’s stance mirrors its handling of the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers’ training bubble in 2020.

In that case, UST cooperated with the league’s investigation and submitted all pertinent reports and documents regarding the incident. After reviewing the findings and determining that violations had been committed, the UAAP imposed an indefinite ban on then-head coach Aldin Ayo.

Alongside this, the UAAP outlined the key actions being undertaken to strengthen governance and safeguard student-athlete welfare, including enforcing sanctions in cases where there are breaches of established protocols, laws, and regulations, provided these are determined through due process and in accordance with governance and disciplinary procedures.

It also said it is reviewing and, if needed, revising existing rules and policies to further strengthen accountability, enhance student-athlete welfare, and uphold the highest standards of safety, while likewise promoting and expanding access to protective measures, mental health resources, and support services for student-athletes, coaches, and staff, alongside sustaining programs that foster camaraderie and communal well-being.

The league stressed that the tragedy serves as a reminder of its responsibility to prioritize athlete welfare beyond competition.

“This difficult moment has reminded us that the care and protection of our student-athletes are paramount,” the UAAP said.
