ANTIPOLO — Lenda Douanga and Vince Magbuhos scored the big baskets as Adamson University outlasted De La Salle University in overtime, 86-84, in the UAAP Season 85 Men’s Basketball Tournament, Saturday in Ynares Sports Center here.
With La Salle leading 79-76 with six seconds left in regulation, Douanga unleashed a three that forced overtime at 79-79.
The Green Archers tried to score the game-winner in the next possession but Kevin Quiambao failed to convert in the paint.
Come the extended period, Magbuhos sank a three in the 1:52 mark period to give the Soaring Falcons an 86-84 edge. CJ Austria had two free throws to equalize but he failed to make both.
Evan Nelle then had a late drive to the rim but he missed the target as Adamson was the victor of a hard-fought game.
“It was our second overtime game this season and right after regulation, we reminded the players we should have learned our lesson in that previous overtime game against UP, where we forced the overtime but first couple of minutes, nag-slack off kami that’s why we lost that game to UP,” said Adamson coach Nash Racela.
“But today, it was nice that we were able to remind them and it was nice that they were able to respond positively. That’s how you’re able to win ball games,” the former UAAP champion coach continued.
Jerom Lastimosa led the Soaring Falcons with 29 points, eight rebounds, and six assists in close to 35 minutes of action. Joshua Yerro had 13 points while Douanga produced 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Cedrick Manzano also contributed 13 points to the Adamson cause while Magbuhos had eight points and six rebounds.
Adamson’s three-point shooting propelled them past La Salle as the former made nine-out-of-30 while the latter only produced four-out-of-22.
Quiambao led La Salle with 20 points and nine rebounds followed by Schonnie Winston and Michael Phillips who contributed 17 points each.
Austria had 16 points for the Green Archers while Nelle had nine points and nine assists.
The result means that Adamson and La Salle end the first round with identical 3-4 records, with the former in fifth place and the latter in sixth.
