Tenorio thanks Cone for trust, calls comeback one of greatest games

LA Tenorio came into Ginebra’s crucial affair against Star Hotshots on Friday night shooting only 25 percent from three-point area. In his last two outings, Tenorio made only a single trey out of six tries.

Tenorio continued to struggle from beyond the arc against Star. But with the game on the line and Ginebra on the verge of completing a rousing comeback, those numbers did not matter anymore for the floor general. He just wanted to hit a big shot in the end.

“Hindi ko na inisip. Wala na ring gusto tumira eh. Si Coach Tim (Cone) wala na siyang mahugot. Good thing, yung defense, yun ang bumuhay sa amin,” Tenorio said of Ginebra’s miserable shooting touch from three-point area prior to the late-game turnaround.

With the game knotted at 89 apiece, Tenorio drained a triple with just over two seconds remaining coming off a pass from Sol Mercado in overtime period to hand Ginebra an awe-inspiring come-from-behind win.

Ginebra trailed by as much as 18 points in the final quarter and was still down by 8 in the last 1:13 when the team started to hit tough shots and eventually force extension.

“Lahat ng shoot ko puro yung mahihirap pa at mga bail-out eh,” Tenorio joked. “Hindi ko alam kung paano ie-explain eh. Pero it’s an opportunity lang talaga for us to get back to the game. Give credit lang sa players that came out and didn’t give up.”

“Yung tiwala ni Coach Tim na binigay sa akin, he knows I am struggling offensively. Actually last game pa eh. We had a talk the other day and kinausap niya ako. Wag na daw ako mag-isip at laruin ko lang,” he shared.

Tenorio finished the game scoring 11 points including 3-for-10 from downtown. He nailed two of the long range bombs during the overtime period, providing Ginebra with tough shots.

“Nag pay-off naman kahit papano,” he said.

Still shocked by how Ginebra was able to pull it off, Tenorio considered the terrific win “one for the books.”

“It’s a merry Christmas,” he said. “Feeling ko one of the greatest games ito.”
