PFF lauds homegrown talents after PH U15’s World Cup debut

The Philippine Under-15 Men’s National Football Team made a promising impression in its maiden FIFA U-15 World Cup & Festival, finishing 110th out of 189 participating nations in the inaugural global competition held in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Fielding a squad composed primarily of homegrown talents, the Filipinos recorded four victories and a draw in 10 matches, scoring 19 goals throughout the tournament.

The young Nationals opened their campaign with victories over Belize, 1-0, and Curaçao, 8-1, in the group stage before adding wins against Macau, 2-0, and Aruba, 5-2, in the classification round. They also settled for a 2-2 draw against Zimbabwe.

Philippine Football Federation President John Anthony Gutierrez viewed the campaign as an encouraging indication of the potential of locally developed players when given opportunities to compete internationally.

“Our U15’s performance tells us that our homegrowns, when given a platform, can compete well against opponents from other continents,” said Gutierrez.

The Philippine delegation was largely composed of players developed through regional football associations (RFAs), schools, and local clubs. Several members of the squad also participated in the 2026 PFF U16 National Championship held in Bago City last May.

For Gutierrez, the experience provided valuable insights into the country’s grassroots development program and its potential to produce players capable of competing at the highest level.

“Because of FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s push for a tournament of this scale, we have a clearer vision in building a system that produces world-class youth athletes from our RFAs and domestic clubs who can stand alongside our heritage talents abroad in future international competitions,” he said.

Gutierrez also lauded the team’s resilience, particularly after being challenged by unfamiliar opposition and a demanding match schedule.

“The group stage was a litmus test of how far our local talents can go on the global stage,” he said.

“These boys never backed down. They faced strong, unfamiliar teams, played five matches in three days, and kept fighting. That attitude is what we want in every Philippine national team,” he added.

The inaugural tournament brought together 189 FIFA member associations, providing Filipino youngsters with an opportunity to measure themselves against international opposition.

Gutierrez was among those present at the FIFA World Cup in June 2026 when FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced the staging of the inaugural U15 competition.

“Our youth players competed in a global tournament, against teams from around the world. That kind of exposure was out of reach for most Filipinos in the past. We thank FIFA for creating this event because now, we can play against and learn from countries from distant lands,” Gutierrez said.

Another significant aspect of the competition was its use of the eight-a-side format, which the PFF has been promoting in partnership with the Department of Education as part of its grassroots development initiatives.

The format was introduced in the elementary football competition of the 2026 Palarong Pambansa in May and is also being utilized in the Under-13 and Under-11 divisions of the ongoing PFF RFA Youth League.

“Eight-a-side gives young players more touches, more decisions, and more chances to score. If we want to do well internationally, our players need to grow up in this format. That is why we pushed for it in the Palaro and in youth leagues as early as 2024,” Gutierrez explained.

With the tournament now serving as a valuable learning experience, the PFF hopes to build on the squad’s performance as it continues developing the country’s next generation of football talent.

“To the players, Coach Roxy Dorlas and the coaching staff, your families, and our fans, thank you. You have already given Philippine football something to build on, and an unforgettable experience that inspires us,” Gutierrez said.
