The Philippine Under-15 Men’s National Football Team begins its historic journey on the global stage when it faces Morocco in the inaugural FIFA U15 World Cup & Festival on Saturday at the Hovsan Competition Complex in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Head coach Roxy Dorlas will lead a 14-player squad assembled from domestic clubs, schools, regional football associations, and Filipino communities abroad as the Philippines competes in FIFA’s new eight-a-side tournament.
The team’s participation marks a significant step for the country’s youth football program, with the young Filipinos set to test themselves against international opposition in a competition featuring five Group F assignments.
“Representing the Philippines at the first FIFA U15 World Cup & Festival is a milestone for these young players and for our youth program,” said Philippine Football Federation president John Anthony Gutierrez.
The roster reflects the breadth of Filipino football talent, with players coming from Luzon and the Visayas, as well as the United States and Spain.
Jordan Tan of Makati FC and Keanefred Cristiane Versales of De La Salle-Zobel will be among the players tasked with protecting the goal, while Paolo Enrique Fernandez of PAREF Southridge, Juan Carlo Felipe Morales of FA Manila, Frank Jonas Oliverio of Makati FC, and Matthew Zamora of Arayat FC bolster the defensive unit.
Midfield duties will fall to Micah Alva, who plays in Philadelphia, Nathan Caligdong of Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo, John Zhian Enario of FA Manila, Quito Alexander Pascual of the LA Galaxy Academy, and John Carlo Rendon of Makati FC.
Up front, the Philippines will look to Satriani Alcantara, who plays in Barcelona, Spain, alongside Cavite-based forwards Dan Emmanuel Becera of Trece FC and Josef Adrien Peña of La Salle-Dasmariñas to provide the attacking threat.
Gutierrez said the squad’s diverse backgrounds reflect the federation’s effort to bring together promising players from different football environments.
“We chose a squad that combines players from our domestic clubs, schools, and regional football associations with Filipinos based abroad. We are proud of all of them, and we ask Filipino fans to support them,” he said.
Dorlas, a former national team player who previously coached the Philippine U16 side, will be supported by assistant coaches Tetsuya Tsuchida, also a former U16 head coach, and Joseph Jino Villarino, a former Philippine U19 international.
Gutierrez expressed confidence in the coaching staff’s ability to guide the young squad, citing their familiarity with the players and the country’s youth development pathway.
Following their opener against Morocco, the Filipinos face a demanding schedule in Baku. They meet Liberia on October 25 at 6:30 p.m. before taking on Costa Rica at 12:45 a.m. on October 26. The team will then play Belize at 6:30 p.m. that same day before wrapping up the group stage against Curacao at 12:45 p.m. on October 27.
The Philippine U15 team’s participation is backed by the Philippine Sports Commission and private-sector partners Puma, Studio 300, Padel 300, and Anytime Fitness.
