A key figure in Philippine football has officially stepped away from the national team program.
Freddy Gonzalez, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Senior National Teams Director and Men’s National Team Manager, has concluded his tenure after nearly a year at the helm.
His departure marks another significant change in the federation’s leadership, following the earlier exits of coaches Albert Capellas and Tom Saintfiet, and long-time football patron Jeff Cheng.
Gonzalez’s resignation comes at a time of transition for the national squads, with major tournaments looming on the horizon — including the third round of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers for the men’s side and the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 qualifiers set to begin later this month. The country is also preparing for the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand before the year ends.
In a statement released by the PFF, Gonzalez described the decision as deeply personal and difficult.
“It has been one of the biggest honors of my life to be a part of this team, and I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity. This was a very difficult decision to make and one that required much reflection and introspection,” Gonzalez shared.
“Now is the time for me to focus on other pursuits and opportunities, both personal and professional.”
A former national team striker and standout in the defunct United Football League, Gonzalez took over as PFF executive during a pivotal time for Philippine football.
Under his leadership, the men’s squad — now rebranded from the Azkals — returned to the semifinals of the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024, highlighted by a historic victory over Thailand, their first in the tournament against the regional powerhouse in over two decades.
Beyond that, Gonzalez was credited for ushering in a new wave of promising talent and elevating the level of professionalism within the national team programs.
His work, both on and off the pitch, helped lay the groundwork for what the federation hopes is a sustained period of competitiveness in Asia.
“I want to thank all of the players for their sacrifices and commitment to the team. They all have changed the culture of the National Team. In such a short time, they have made a difference in Philippine football, for the better,” he added.
“I am looking forward to seeing them become a force in Asia, and will be rooting for them from the sidelines. It was an absolute privilege!”
PFF President John Gutierrez expressed his gratitude for Gonzalez’s contributions, emphasizing that the federation intends to build on the progress made during his tenure.
“We are grateful for Freddy’s dedication and contributions during his time with the PFF, most especially his efforts to advance our national team programs. We truly thank him for his service,” Gutierrez said.
“The PFF remains fully committed to building upon the foundations laid for Philippine football. We assure the players that we will continue Fred’s framework for the national team, diligently ensuring our programs are well-supported and thriving,” he continued.
“We are dedicated to providing every available resource, and with the support of football stakeholders, we look forward to continued progress and success for our national teams in the months and years ahead.”
Alongside Gonzalez, Assistant Team Manager Mikkel Paris has also stepped down. The PFF is expected to announce new leadership for the national team programs soon.
