Gilas Women are headed to Australia.
This is Australia’s first time hosting the region’s flagship women’s national team competition and the first FIBA Asia event to be held in the country.
After the successful outcome of the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Sydney, the Women’s Asia Cup offers basketball fans the chance to see Australia and China face off in a potential rematch of their World Cup semi-final matchup that attracted nearly 12,000 spectators at the Sydney Superdome.
“We’re honored to host the first FIBA Women’s Asia Cup in Australia and have the best basketball players from the region compete on our home soil,” says Matt Scriven, CEO of Basketball Australia.
Australia is currently ranked second in Asia and aims to win their first Women’s Asia Cup Division A on home soil, but must dethrone Japan who won the Women’s Asia Cup 2021 in Amman, Jordan.
The Philippines has been part of Division A since 2015.
The all-time leader in Women’s Asia Cups is Korea with 12 wins, followed by China with 11.
The 2023 Division B will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from August 13 to 19.
