Superbon walked out of the Singapore Indoor Stadium with one of the most memorable knockouts in ONE Super Series history, the ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Title firmly on his shoulders, and the notoriety of putting the GOAT to sleep.
The Thai star can now call himself as the best featherweight in the world after knocking Giorgio “The Doctor” Petrosyan at ONE: FIRST STRIKE last Friday, 15 October in what many believe could be a contender of the knockout of the year.
The finish came in the 20-second mark of round two. The Banchamek Gym standout timed a right head kick right at the jaw of “The Doctor” to score the sensational finish.
It was an amazing display of timing and skill on Superbon’s part as the first two kicks that he sent to Petrosyan’s body were telegraphed. That prompted the Armenian-Italian to respond with a left, which ended up as his biggest mistake.
Seeing an opening now, Superbon delivered a well-placed head kick which sent Petrosyan crashing stiff in the canvas. Meanwhile, he ran circles around the Circle for the victory lap. He is the first person to beat Petrosyan in seven years – and just the second one to knock him out.
But the main event wasn’t the only slobberknocker in the card. Kickboxing fans were treated with one of the best all-striking shows this year.
The ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix also kicked off on the same night, though it ended in a bittersweet fashion.
Tournament favorite Marat Grigorian put an end to the legendary career of Andy “Souwer Power” Souwer with a second round TKO win via leg injury. In the semifinals he will be taking on a familiar face in Chingiz “Chinga” Allazov, who dispatched Samy “AK47” Sana in style earlier in the evening.
The other pairing pits “The Killer Kid” Sitthichai – who outlasted Tayfun “Turbine” Ozcan via split-decision in their clash – against Davit Kiria. The latter scored a huge upset over Enriko “The Hurricane” Kehl via first round TKO.
Heavyweight kickboxing sensation Rade Opacic also continued his winning ways in the card. He finished Patrick “Big Swiss” Schmid in the second round of their encounter.
