Strong Group steps in to sponsor cut UE Lady Warriors’ education

Former University of the East boosters Strong Group Athletics, led by chairman Frank Lao, is not turning its back on its former student-athletes.

In a Facebook post by current University of the Philippines assistant coach Obet Vital, he shared that Lao has pledged to shoulder the scholarships of several Lady Warriors who lost their athletic grants after being cut from the team following the school’s tryouts.

On Tuesday afternoon at Gloria Maris Restaurant in Greenhills, Lao personally assured Honey Lorono, Roan Jane Enriquez, Lauritz Ginoo, Keshia Famulagan, Tin Ecalla, and Kayce Balingit that they would be able to complete their college degrees under his sponsorship.

Lao committed to covering both their tuition and living allowances.

“Thanks to the swift and compassionate action of Boss Frank and the SGA family, support was extended to ensure these athletes continue to thrive,” Vital wrote.

“For the senior players, tuition sponsorships along with food and dorm allowances have been provided so they can stay focused on their final year — both in the classroom and on the court — as they prepare for next year’s draft. Meanwhile, our three rookies were successfully assisted in transferring to a new school, where they will receive full athletic scholarships and benefits — giving them the opportunity to continue their education while pursuing the sport they love.”

In a statement released by UE on June 14, the university confirmed that “several former players were not retained for Season 88” due to a “rigorous and merit-based selection process.”

While acknowledging the difficulty of the outcome for those affected, the university maintained that the selection was both “competitive and transparent.”

UE clarified that athletic service grants are not entitlements, but rather “a privilege extended to student-athletes in recognition of their service and representation of the university.”

These grants are contingent on performance, academic eligibility, and the availability of slots within the varsity program.

“The outcome of the tryout resulted in some student-athletes losing their spot on the team and, subsequently, their privileges,” the statement read. “Those grants have now been awarded to others who qualified. Each team or event has a limited number of athletic service grant slots.”

Vital expressed his gratitude for the support extended to his former players.

“This is a story of resilience, generosity, and unity within the athletic community. Let’s cheer them on as they continue chasing their dreams, now with even greater purpose,” he concluded.
