The Star Hotshots banked on the heroics of Ayra Hufanda to record their first win in the PBA Dickies women’s 3-on-3 basketball tournament Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Hufanda knocked in nine points as Star walloped Mahindra, 15-6, to pick up their first win in Group B. The Hotshots improved to 1-3 while Mahindra dropped to 0-4.
Star opened the game on a 5-0 note, with Denyse Jimenez and Patricia Kalingking each scoring two baskets.
Giselle Galisim then single-handedly carried the Enforcers back, scoring 6 straight points, including two and-one plays, to cut the Star lead down to 7-6.
Hufanda, however, scored the next 7 points, including three long range shots to help Star pull away.
In Group A, the Meralco Bolts overcame a challenge from winless Rain or Shine to book a 6-4 victory and improve to 2-2.
The Elasto Painters took the early 4-2 lead as Charlene Camba scored all of Rain or Shine’s points. But Clarissa Guevara scored back-to-back baskets inside to tie the count at 4 apiece.
Vea Cuevas then knocked down the go-ahead two to propel Meralco to victory.
Rain or Shine dropped to 0-4 in the team standings.
