University of the Philippines women’s volleyball head coach Shaq delos Santos politely begged off from being interviewed regarding his team’s petition seeking a change of leadership after the alleged ‘mismanagement’ of their past managers.
Tiebreaker Times asked delos Santos for comment after Cignal’s 25-14, 25-11, 19-25, 17-25, 15-11 victory over Choco Mucho in the 2023 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference at the Philsports Arena, Tuesday but the former national team head coach declined.
In the letter, the Fighting Maroons listed their alleged problems which include delayed and reduced monthly allowances, unsettled dormitory balance, lack of academic support, poor and mishandled COVID-19 exposure, quarantine, and treatment response, poor injury coordination and treatment, neglected need for new sports equipment, mismanagement, and team manager’s bad attitude, and issues with funds, sponsorship, and coach’s salaries.
The letter was addressed to UP chancellor Fidel Nemenzo and was signed by 21 players.
Aside from these, the Fighting Maroons also requested to reinstate the Nowhere To Go But UP Foundation, Inc. (NTGBUP) to take charge of their team.
The team’s request to reinstate the ntgbUP was not granted following a dialogue between the Office of the Diliman Chancellor, the College of Human Kinetics, and the players.
The ntgbUP board, however, unanimously passed a resolution to provide the Fighting Maroons with funds that can help them address their concerns. The Office of the Diliman Chancellor and the CHK also gave the team assurances that they will look at all of their concerns and address them accordingly.
UP currently stands at 0-2 in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament after losing to Far Eastern University and De La Salle University, respectively.
