Shan Nunag keeps feet on the ground despite unbeaten start

Shan Nunag has yet to taste defeat in her young UAAP career, leading De La Salle University to 10 straight wins in the Season 88 Collegiate Women’s Volleyball Tournament.

As the Lady Spikers’ main setter, Nunag has guided her team to an unblemished record, securing their 10th win and a Final Four berth with a 25-15, 25-18, 25-20 victory over the UP Fighting Maroons on Sunday at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.

With this dominant campaign, many have hailed Nunag as the missing piece for La Salle, last season’s runner-up to back-to-back champion National University.

For the rookie playmaker from Angeles, Pampanga, her composure and maturity on the court are shaped by the guidance she receives from her seniors.

“Honestly, hindi naman po ako ganoon ka-parang mature pa kahit na yun po yung nakikita po ng iba. Dahil lang din po siya sa tulong po ng coaches and ates,” said the 5-foot-7 setter.

“Kasi lagi po akong gina-guide sa lahat sa pag-set. And yung mental preparedness ko rin po sa loob ng court. Dahil din po sa kanila. Kasi nandoon po yung assurance and alam ko din po na may susuporta po sa akin na may tutulong po sa akin sa loob.”

Nunag delivered 15 excellent sets against UP, resulting in a balanced offensive attack with three players scoring in double figures, led by Shevana Laput with 16 points.

Angel Canino contributed 15 points, while Amie Provido added 10. Shane Reterta and Lilay Del Castillo followed with nine and eight points, respectively.

With La Salle clinching their 16th straight postseason appearance, an even bigger goal remains: an elimination-round sweep that would also secure it an automatic slot in the best-of-three finals.

Nunag, however, is keeping her focus close to home, taking it one game at a time and concentrating on the opponent in front of them.

La Salle still has to face Far Eastern University, Ateneo de Manila University, University of the East, and NU.

“For the next games po, isa-isa lang po. One game at a time nga, and paghahandaan po namin yung each game po na paparating.”
