The Indonesian Olympic Committee has proposed a new initiative that would introduce an additional multi-sport event to supplement the Southeast Asian Games — the SEA Games Plus.
Unlike the traditional SEA Games, SEA Games Plus would feature participation from nations outside Southeast Asia, including countries from Oceania such as Australia and New Zealand.
The proposed event would place greater emphasis on Category 1 and Olympic sports, in contrast to the traditional SEA Games, which also includes Asian Games disciplines and traditional sports.
“We are in contact with several countries to begin expanding the SEA Games,” Indonesian Olympic Committee president Raja Sapta Oktohari told VN Express.
Oktohari added that the traditional SEA Games has increasingly become a showcase for host nations and “have been subject to manipulation.”
Under the proposal, SEA Games Plus would be held in even-numbered years, while the SEA Games would continue to be staged in odd-numbered years.
The Philippines is being considered to host the inaugural SEA Games Plus in 2028. It is also set to host the 37th edition of the SEA Games in 2033.
