SEA Games: Wait worth it for Ubas as he bags long jump gold

Janry Ubas pocketed the second gold medal for the Philippine national athletics team, after taking the lead in the men’s long jump on the third day of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games athletics competitions on Tuesday, at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The Far Eastern University alumnus won the title, which was the country’s 23rd gold, with a best jump of 7.85 meters, far ahead of Vietnam’s Pham Van Nghia, who had 7.52 meters, and Malaysia’s Muhammad Shahrizal Nasharuddin, who had 7.21 meters.

Ubas, the Asian Indoors heptathlon silver medalist, could not capture a second gold in the night as he finished with the silver in these Games’ decathlon with 6923 points against 7468 of reigning champion and Thailand’s Suttisak Singkhon.

Ubas actually leaped a massive 8.08 meters in the long jump event of the decathlon, which boosted his stock, but Singkhon pulled through in the final event — the 1500 meters — to keep the title with a time of 4:00.91.

2019 Games champion Aries Toledo slipped to the bronze-medal finish with 6891 points.

Umajesty Williams and Frederick Ramirez also won a silver and a bronze medal, respectively, after finishing second and third in the men’s 400 meters.

Malaysia’s Umar Osman won the title with 46.34 seconds, while Williams finished with 46.52 seconds, and Ramirez with 46.63 seconds.

Sonny Wagdos and Joida Gagnao added two more silvers later in the evening.

Wagdos’ came in the men’s 5000 meters with a time of 14:36.45, while Gagnao’s was from the women’s 3000 meters steeplechase with a time of 10:40.96.
