After two years, Rhenz Abando has decided not to renew his contract with Anyang Jung Kwan Jang.
The 26-year-old winger announced on his Facebook page that he will not be returning to the Red Booters.
“Thank you for giving me the chance to showcase my talent and passion for the game. Thank you for trusting me. I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it wasn’t for you and the opportunity you’ve given me. I wouldn’t receive the kind of respect I experience nowadays,” he began his statement.
“And to my trainers, translators, and teammates, who have become my family over the past two years, I am grateful to all of you and cherish every moment with you. I am thankful for all the learning you’ve instilled in me, not only on the court but most importantly, off the court,” he expressed.
“To the JKJ fans, thank you for the undying support and belief in us. Win or lose, you guys are always by our side. Thank you so much, and please continue to support this team no matter what,” he continued.
“And to all the Filipinos who supported me, especially the OFWs in South Korea, thank you so much for your support, especially during workdays. Even though you had work, you always made time to watch our games. You made me feel that I am not alone, and I hope I made all of you proud,” he shared.
“It was a great two-year ride, like a roller coaster with many ups and downs. But nonetheless, I learned a lot.”
After a year at Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Abando decided to go pro, signing with Anyang KGC.
It was reported that he was the highest-paid Asian import in the KBL.
During his first year, he averaged 8.48 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game, helping Anyang KGC win the title.
His second stint, though, was plagued with injuries, limiting him to just 30 games this season.
Anyang JKJ ended the season in ninth place with an 18-36 record.
According to multiple sources closely monitoring the situation, Abando had been offered a lower contract by the Red Boosters for his third year.
Now, B.League teams are looking to sign Abando.
