Quezon emerged as the 2024 Maharlika Pilipinas Volleyball Association (MPVA) champions, completing a clean sweep of Biñan Tatak Gel 1-Pacman Partylist with a 25-19, 24-26, 25-18, 25-15 victory in Game 2 on Wednesday night at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena.
The Tangerines had an easier path this time, compared to their dramatic five-set win in Game 1. With their home crowd rallying behind them, they capped off a magnificent title conquest in their first season as an expansion team in the MPVA.
Rhea Mae Densing was named MPVA Most Valuable Player, capping her remarkable performance with 17 points on 17 hits as Quezon triumphed in the league’s first home-and-away season, founded by former Senator and MPBL chairman Manny Pacquiao.
Densing had earlier fired 22 points in Game 1, where the Tangerines pulled off a thrilling 25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 21-25, 17-15 comeback win on the road at the Alonte Sports Arena in Laguna.
Quezon, one of two expansion teams in the nine-team league alongside Valenzuela, finished with an impressive 16-2 record in their MPVA debut, securing the title in dominant fashion.
Mary Grace Borromeo led Quezon with a game-high 18 points in Game 2, while Game 1 hero Cristy Ondangan and Saint Benilde senior Mycah Go each contributed 16 points, supporting Densing in another well-rounded offensive attack.
The team was backed by the championship core from the three-peat NCAA champion College of St. Benilde.
Quezon’s offense was guided by MPVA Best Setter Chenae Basarte, while Densing earned the Best Opposite Hitter award and Ondangan won the First Best Middle Blocker award for her stellar performance.
The Tangerines showed no signs of slowing down after their hard-fought Game 1 victory, and with the threat of a potential Game 3 eliminated, they clinched the title with a 10-point win in the decisive fourth set.
Their only setback came in the second set, which they narrowly lost 24-26, but they dominated the third-ranked Biñan side after a semifinal upset win over twice-to-beat Bacoor.
Erika Jin Deloria, the First Best Outside Hitter, had 18 points, while Shane Carmona added 15 for Biñan in their runner-up finish. Zenith Perolino, the Second Best Middle Blocker, contributed 10 points as well.
Biñan had previously secured victories over Bacoor in the semifinals, winning 25-21, 26-24, 25-21 and 25-18, 25-18, 25-16 to earn a shot at the championship.
Other individual awardees included May Ann Nuique (Best Homegrown Player) and Jonah Denise Dolorito (Second Best Outside Hitter) of Biñan, and Angelica Blue Guzman (Best Libero) of bronze medalist Rizal St. Gerrard Charity Foundation.
The MPVA, organized by the Volleyball Masters of the Philippines, is supported by Extreme One-Stop Shop Appliances, ASICS, Mikasa, Gerflor, MPTV, and Outcomm as broadcast partners.
