PBA Board to meet face-to-face, discuss guidelines for return

The PBA Board of Governors will convene in a meeting on Wednesday, with most intent on showing up physically and keen on crafting measures to guide ball clubs through resumption of training and, hopefully, a season restart after the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic brought  everything to a screeching halt last March.

The meeting will still be hosted online, but chairman Ricky Vargas of TNT KaTropa and virtually the rest of the league governors want their presence in the PBA office in Libis, Quezon City.

And in their first face-to-face conference since the lockdown, PBA commissioner Willie Marcial and the board will draft study proposals for baby steps leading to a possible return to workouts, training, and other activities of the 12 club teams.

“All these we’ll do with the approval from the government. Hindi kami gagalaw without their approval,” said Marcial.

Per government guidelines, athletes are already allowed to some activities under General Community Quarantine (GCQ).

And everybody hopes the situation gets better, to pave the way for the continued relaxation of quarantine restrictions in the National Capital Region and the eventual transition to new normal.

For the PBA, the end goal is to salvage PBA Season 45 by holding at least one conference that would start in October at the latest. The PBA board awaits August before making the final decision.

“Things will be easier to decide on if a vaccine for COVID-19 comes up. The government and all of us hope for it,” said Marcial.

The Commissioner’s Office has resumed operation after getting all the personnel to COVID-19 test courtesy of SMC chief Ramon S. Ang Saturday and having the PBA office thoroughly disinfected Sunday.

The governors use the Viewing Room instead of the regular Conference Room to properly observe social distancing in their meeting.

“Our Viewing Room is double the size of our Conference Room.”
