Paul Zamar is left searching for a new team as he was no longer renewed by Blackwater despite a good showing in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup.
The veteran floor general has now become a free agent, as he was one of two players recently let go by the team, fueling speculations that the team is once again freeing up space and budget to accommodate a major trade soon.
The other was Clifford Jopia, while the team is still assessing whether or not veteran big man Bradwyn Guinto should be kept, per team insiders.
Sedrick Barefield’s contract, on the other hand, is set to expire this July, and it remains unknown if the team will make a move or let him go to free agency.
This recent development is part of Blackwater’s rebuild under Pat Aquino, who took over the coaching reins from Jeff Cariaso after the former player turned mentor resigned following a 1-4 start in the midseason conference.
With Aquino, the team went 1-6 to finish their campaign, although that one win was against San Miguel by way of a 126-120 decision last April 22.
They went on to finish with a 2-10 record, although some of the Bossing’s games after their new mentor were winnable ones, particularly those against TNT and Ginebra — both of which are currently in the midst of the Finals.
And one of those who offered some glimmer of hope was Zamar, who at 38 showed that he could still provide quality minutes off the bench.
A steady playmaker with a knack for hitting shots from deep consistently, the former ASEAN Basketball League star averaged 9.3 points on 40.7-percent shooting from the floor, 1.3 assists, and 1.9 assists in eight games.
The three-time PBA champion with the Beermen signed with Blackwater back in May of last year, marking his second stint with the Bossing.
Now, Zamar and his camp are hoping to get the interest of other teams in the league for the Season 50 Governors’ Cup, which opens July 10.
