The Philippines is mourning the passing of one of its cage heroes, beloved comedians, and public servants.
Rosalio “Yoyong” D. Martires (September 9, 1946 – June 18, 2024) passed away on Tuesday evening at the age of 77.
His daughter, Moby Leah, announced the news on her social media pages.
Martires, a product of Southwestern University, was one of the top point guards in Philippine basketball during the 1960s.
The 5-foot-8 guard was part of the Philippine team that played in the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics and the 1973 team that won the FIBA Asia Championship.
He then had a 10-year pro career, playing for San Miguel.
After retiring from basketball, he ventured into show business, becoming one of the funniest comedians in the industry.
He starred in 29 films and numerous sitcoms.
Martires also served as the vice mayor of Pasig from 2004 to 2013.
Viewing of his remains will begin tonight at 7:00 PM at the Evergreen Chapels and Crematory.
