With a renewed mindset and continued growth, Obed Mukaba has been making significant strides for National University in the UAAP Season 88 Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Tournament.
Last season, Mukaba shared playing time with Choi Diao in one middle blocker position, while Peng Taguibolos had secured the other.
This year, however, the Congolese middle blocker has been able to stay on the court longer, demonstrating his consistency at an improved level.
He played a crucial role in NU’s 25-22, 25-23, 25-22 victory over Ateneo de Manila University on Sunday, tallying eight points, including five blocks, helping the Bulldogs secure a 5-1 record.
For Mukaba, a shift in mindset has sparked his development this season—his fourth year with NU.
“Of course, last season I was, I think, a little bit nervous sometimes during the game. It’s most important, your mood during the game,” he shared.
“So this season, I try to enjoy every game, every point with my teammates. And if we have a mistake, we try to bawi. That makes my mood very good.”
Head coach Dante Alinsunurin expressed delight at how Mukaba embraced the advice and instructions from the coaching staff to further elevate his game.
The 6-foot-6 middle blocker scored two crucial blocks late in the game when the Blue Eagles were attempting a comeback, denying reigning MVP Kennedy Batas at the net and keeping the Bulldogs afloat.
Mukaba’s composure was evident even when he admitted to two block touches in different situations during the third set, which resulted in two green cards.
“Well sabi ko nga sa kaniya, kulang pa, kulang pa. Kailangan always in practice na pogi, pogi feeling, and sa game din pogi din kasi kapag laging nakasimangot, sabi ko, ‘yung focus niya nawawala,” said Alinsunurin.
“Naiintindihan naman niya and ayun nga, continue lang ‘yung ganoong mindset na kapag nagkakamali, kailangan bawi agad.”
