Ashlyn Abong (September 21, 2006 – June 27, 2025), Gilas Pilipinas Girls standout and National University Lady Bullpup, passed away on Friday.
She was only 18 years old.
According to Gilas Women program director Patrick Aquino, Abong collapsed while training at National University.
The school’s medical team immediately attempted to revive her and rushed her to the hospital, but she unfortunately did not make it.
Abong was a consistent member of the Gilas Girls program and played in last year’s FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Cup Division B.
The 5-foot-11 center also suited up for the NU Lady Bullpups in UAAP Season 87, where she averaged 11.63 points, 10.38 rebounds, and 1.63 assists per game.
Her passing is a heartbreaking loss to Philippine women’s basketball.
“Rest well, Ashlyn. We will miss you. My sincere condolences to the family,” wrote Aquino.
“Kalaro, hindi kalaban… Rest peacefully in His arms, beloved child of God. Thank you for making us better,” said UST head coach Sen Dysangco in a heartfelt tribute.
Her head coach Camilla Escoto was heartbroken with her prized ward’s passing.
“You will always be my pride and joy, Bong. I’m thankful for the opportunity to have seen you grow and mature over the past years with NU — not just as an athlete, but more importantly, as a person. The way you light up a room with your smile and energy is simply contagious. I will always be proud of the life you’ve lived,” expressed Escoto.
“Mahal na mahal kita, Bong!”
