NLEX adopts ‘last season’ mindset in quest for semis breakthrough

NLEX aims to finally break through to the semifinals after three consecutive quarterfinal exits during PBA Season 49 and make its first finals appearance in its 11th season in the PBA.

During the Road Warriors’ sendoff on September 26 at SM City Clark, team governor Ronald Dulatre laid out this ambitious goal.

“As we prepare for our eleventh season in the PBA—and what a special one it is as the league celebrates its 50th anniversary as well—it’s a historic moment for Philippine basketball and an opportunity for our team to make history of our own,” said Dulatre. “Over the past ten seasons, we’ve built a reputation of resilience and hard work. We’ve had our share of highs and lows, but through it all, the Road Warriors have shown heart.

“But in our eleventh season, it’s time to turn that heart into something bigger—into wins, deeper playoff runs, and a finals run that we’ve been chasing since Day One.”

In franchise history, NLEX has only reached the semifinals twice—during the 2017-18 Philippine Cup and the 2021 Governors’ Cup.

Dulatre also emphasized that the team should approach this season with a “last-season” mentality.

“Sabi ko nga nung general assembly natin, let’s raise the bar this season. Let’s treat this season as our last season.

“We are not just participants; we are here to compete, to fight, and to win,” Dulatre added.

Video messages were also sent by Metro Pacific Investments Corporation Chairman, President, and CEO Manny V. Pangilinan; Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation President and CEO Gilbert Santa Maria; and PBA Chairman and TNT Governor Ricky Vargas.

Vargas stressed that he wants to see NLEX not only break through but also outperform the other MVP Group teams, namely TNT and Meralco.

“I told Coach Jong (Uichico) that the NLEX Road Warriors only have two goals this season. Aside from playing their best in every game, one is to beat all MVP Group teams, especially TNT. If you can, and I’m sure you can,” said Vargas.

“Two is to be in the top four. You almost did it, and I know you can do it. What better way to do that than in the 50th season of the PBA.”

Leading the Road Warriors this season is PBA Season 49 Mythical Team member Robert Bolick, alongside Kevin Alas.

Completing the roster are Anthony Semerad, Javee Mocon, Baser Amer, Dave Marcelo, Robbie Herndon, Matt Nieto, Richie Rodger, Enoch Valdez, Dominick Fajardo, Jonnel Policarpio, Brandon Ramirez, Xyrus Torres, and reserve Mike Miranda.

The Road Warriors will open their campaign on Wednesday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo against defending champion San Miguel.
