The NCAA Management Committee released a statement on Sunday regarding the Gab Gamboa case.
In the statement, the NCAA Management Committee, led by season chairman Estafanio Boquiron of EAC and vice chairman Paul Supan of JRU, clarified that no final decision has been made yet on what the sanction is for one-time Cardinal Gamboa.
“This pertains to social media reports that the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has banned Mapua University (MU) basketball player Mr. Gabriel Dan Gamboa from playing in NCAA. Relative thereto the NCAA Management Committee (ManCom) hereby clarifies that no decision has been made as to the penalty to be imposed on him,” said in the statement.
“To reiterate, the NCAA decision was that Mr. Gamboa was ineligible to play because he was also enrolled in another school when he played. Thus, consistent with NCAA Rules, MU forfeited its game in favor of San Beda University (SBU) last 10 September 2022,” it continued.
It was contrary to what NCAA commissioner Tonichi Pujante had said yesterday in front of the media members that Gamboa was slapped with a lifetime banishment from the league.
Tiebreaker Times reported last month that the Cardinals fielded a cross-enrollee from St. Clare College of Caloocan during their debut where Mapua won against San Beda, 66-55, but it was also overturned yesterday.
With regards to the punishment meted on Mapua, the ManComm said that it is within the league’s parameters.
“Further, with regard to the effect on eligibility, we maintain that the NCAA Basketball Commissioner merely interpreted the matter in accordance with the NCAA Rule Book,” it read.
“Finally, the NCAA has yet to decide on the sanction against Mr. Gamboa.”
