NCAA 99: George Diamante’s monster double-double powers Letran past Mapua

In a commanding performance, Colegio de San Juan de Letran surged ahead in the third quarter to secure an 86-69 victory over Mapua University, extending its winning streak to three in the NCAA Season 99 Juniors’ Basketball Tournament on Friday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.

For the second consecutive game, George Diamante had a monster double-double outing with 26 points and 13 rebounds on 50-percent shooting, as the Squires forced the Red Robins into their first loss of the season.

Despite going down by one entering the second half, Letran pulled together a massive 28-13 third quarter and ballooned their lead to as big as 18, controlling the match from thereon.

For the Red Robins, Lawrence Mangubat put up 18 points and five boards while Aki Valina contributed 15 markers and five assists.

Meanwhile, University of Perpetual Help System  finally soared to solo first as they bested Arellano University, 100-79, improving to 5-0.

UPHSD tied their record by setting a league-high 34 points in the fourth quarter.

Amiel Acido led all scorers with 21 points while five other Junior Altas scored in double digits. En route to reaching the century mark, UPHSD shot 43.3-percent from beyond the arc.

Earlier in the day, San Beda-Rizal eked out a 64-62 win against La Salle Green Hills while Emilio Aguinaldo College kept Lyceum of the Philippines University winless with a 77-63 thrashing.

Drei Lorenzo led San Beda with 15 points and five rebounds while Hendric Vailoces chipped in with 13 markers and eight caroms.

In yet another down-the-wire encounter, the Greenies were tested in the clutch. However, unlike their previous 85-81 victory over Arellano, the Red Cubs ended up on top.

Down by 10 at the half, San Beda recovered with a dominant 22-7 third quarter. LSGH’s seven points were the second lowest output of any team this season, ironically just one point shy of the Red Cubs’ six against Perpetual.

On the other hand, EJ Castillo finished with 19 points and three boards for EAC, as four Brigadiers scored in double digits.

To cap off the quintuple-header, Jose Rizal University powered past San Sebastian College, 68-62, tying EAC at 2-3 in the standings.

For JRU, Martin Pineda led the way with a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds.
