In the third day of the NCAA Season 91 Men’s Beach Volleyball Tournament held at the Boardwalk Beach in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, the University of Perpetual Help Altas kept their unblemished record safe at 8-0 and moved closer in getting an elimination round sweep.
The combo of Rey and Relan Taneo opened their day with a gritty 21-15, 21-19 win over Mapua’s hard-hitting tandem of Philip Bagalay and Peejay Cuzon. After their Mapua match, they scored a major upset against Isaah Arda and Racmade Etrone of defending champions College of Saint Benilde via a lopsided 21-10, 21-18 win. To wrap things up, the Taneo brothers made quick work of the Arellano University Chiefs with a 21-18, 21-13 win.
Aside from Perpetual, Howard Mojica and Kerth Melliza of the EAC Generals also made their presence felt. Breezing smoothly during the first two days of the tourney, EAC went on a roll today as they nailed a 21-12, 21-5 win over Amber Gervacio and Christian Calonia of the San Sebastian Stags. They would follow it up with a thrilling 24-22, 21-14 win over the Mapua Cardinals and ended the day by nailing a huge 21-15, 21-18 win over defending champion Benilde.
With Perpetual and EAC manning the top two slots in the standings, it is still a tight race to the Final Four with the LPU Pirates sitting at third with a 6-2 record while CSB, MIT and AU are knotted in a three-way tie with them sporting 5-3 cards. Completing the rest of the standings is San Beda with a 2-6 record, and San Sebastian and Letran having identical 1-7 records. Lastly, JRU remained winless with a 0-8 card.
The last day of the elimination round will have the top four teams of each division automatically advancing to the semifinal round which will take place immediately after the final elimination round game. If a team sweeps the entire elimination round, it will automatically advance to the championship round and a stepladder format shall be followed. However, there is no incentive for the team that can accomplish that said feat since the championship round will just be a one-game knockout match.
