The PBA hasn’t named a Rookie MVP since Benjie Paras in 1989.
Will we ever see it matched?
Well, someone might just do that. Mikey Williams is in the running for that historic feat following a remarkable run in the recently-concluded Philippine Cup.
The first-year sensation emerged on top of the statistical points (SPs) derby at the end of the tilt that saw him steer TNT past Magnolia for the championship.
He hiked his SPs to 35.3, jumping above Best Player of the Conference Calvin Abueva and NorthPort star Robert Bolick.
Williams averaged 27.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.8 assists en route to being named the PBA Press Corps Finals Most Valuable Player.
The Cal State Fullerton product normed 18.7 markers, 4.8 boards, and 4.5 dimes in a total of 23 games in the conference.
Second in the race is Bolick with 33.7 SPs; followed by Abueva, who dropped to third with 32.3 to his name after leading right from the start.
In fourth is Hotshots center Ian Sangalang with 32.2 SSs. Reigning six-time MVP June Mar Fajardo rounded out the Top Five with 31.8.
Williams, though, isn’t the only rookie in the stats race. Batang Pier newcomer Jamie Malonzo is in sixth with 30.2 SPs.
Christian Standhardinger (29.5), Phoenix’s Jason Perkins (29.4), Scottie Thompson (29.3), and San Miguel’s CJ Perez (29.1) complete the Top 10.
