Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes has officially named TNT’s insurance Mike Myers as the National Team’s reinforcement for the 2017 William Jones Cup in Taipei, Taiwan.
“We’re pretty set with Mike and he’s already agreed,” coach Chot Reyes said Tuesday night as the 6-foot-9 big man was once again present after attending last Thursday’s session.
At first, Reyes and his staff wanted current TNT import Joshua Smith to be the team’s reinforcement, but his right foot injury forced him out of the picture. Moreover, there were other imports like Greg Smith, Ricardo Ratliffe, and Donte Greene who were on his wishlist but all are committed overseas.
“We had wanted Josh Smith but his injury prevents that from happening. Same thing with the others, but I think they’re opting to play in the NBA Summer League. Guys like Ratliffe, on the other hand, want to rest,” the 53-year-old mentor disclosed.
But what inclined the team to pick up the 24-year-old New Jersey native was his commitment and work ethic.
“We like Mike’s attitude.
“He might not be the most talented, but the important thing is he’s willing to work with the young guys. He’s gonna work with us as well,” the five-time champion coach remarked.
The Philippines is gunning for its sixth gold medal in the invitational tournament. Last year, Mighty Sports-Philippines copped gold.
