Mighty Sports taps Justin Brownlee for Dubai cagefest

Mighty Sports-Philippines look to start the year on the right note

After a successful 2016 campaign that saw Mighty Sports take home the William Jones Cup and silver in the Merlion Cup, the Philippine club team is set to enter the 28th annual Dubai International Basketball Tournament. And the first player tapped by the club team is former Ginebra import Justin Brownlee, according to an official of the team.

28-year-old Brownlee needs no introduction to the Filipino audience. A journeyman who has played for the NBA D-League, Mexico, Italy, and France, the utility forward helped end Ginebra’s eight-year championship drought a conference ago — sealing the 2016 PBA Governors Cup with a buzzer-beating triple in Game 6 of the Finals against Meralco.

Brownlee, who stands at 6-foot-7, averaged 27.7 points and 11.2 rebounds in the regular season for the Gin Kings.

The Dubai International Basketball Tournament is a week-long tournament featuring the best club teams from the Middle East. The last Philippines-based club team to join the tournament was the NLEX Road Warriors back in 2015.

College of Saint Benilde Blazers assistant coach Charles Tiu will serve as the team’s head coach. The team has yet to fill up their roster for the tournament but based on the team’s past composition, it will be loaded with the best talent available.

The tournament will run from February 18 to 25 at the Al Ahli Club in Dubai, UAE.
