Canada secured its second consecutive win in the 2024 FIVB Volleyball Nations League Manila Leg with a dominant sweep of Germany, a team previously in good form, 25-19, 25-18, 25-21, on Thursday at the SM Mall of Arena.
The North Americans, who are heading to the Olympic Games next month, improved to a 6-4 win-loss record in the tournament – placing them fifth, just behind Brazil at 6-3.
In the crucial moments of the match, when Germany narrowed the gap to 19-21 in the final set, Canada found the necessary momentum to secure a 4-2 run that ultimately closed out the match.
Luke Herr, the team’s setter, orchestrated a balanced offensive attack for Canada, delivering 16 excellent sets. He enabled Stephen Maar, Anthony Szwarc, and Eric Loeppky to each achieve double-digit points.
Herr commented on the victory, stating, “It was very important to win against Japan and now Germany. We had our ups and downs, but we managed to get this win.”
Reflecting on their performance, the AONS Milon playmaker remarked, “All of our guys were on fire today, and as a setter, that’s great to see. We played strong volleyball for most of the match, although we relaxed a bit towards the end. Fortunately, we regained our focus and secured the win.”
Coming off impressive victories – Canada defeating Japan and Germany upsetting France – the match was anticipated to be competitive.
However, Canada took control early, utilizing strong serving and precise passing to disrupt Germany’s rhythm and defensive strategies.
Canada will aim for a third consecutive win at the Pasay venue against Brazil on Friday at 3:00 PM.
Anthony Szwarc, playing as opposite hitter, contributed crucially with two service aces and effective serves that destabilized Germany’s play.
That allowed Canada’s defense to capitalize on easy pickups and successful counters.
Stephen Maar and Szwarc both scored 15 points, with Maar’s coming from 14 spikes and one block, and Szwarc’s from 11 attacks, two blocks, and the aforementioned aces.
Eric Loeppky added 11 points with 10 kills and one service ace from the left side.
Meanwhile, Germany, now with a 4-6 record, will face the USA on Saturday at 11:00 AM.
