Gilas Women collapse vs Egypt, settle for 10th in WS Baku

Gilas Pilipinas Women suffered a disappointing collapse in the Baku stop of the FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series 2025, finishing 10th overall, Tuesday morning (Manila time) in Azerbaijan.

The Filipinas looked in control early in their Pool D opener against Egypt, building a 15-8 lead before losing momentum down the stretch.

Egypt’s Raneem Mohamed and Nadine Selaawy sparked a comeback, aggressively attacking the basket to draw fouls while capitalizing on Gilas’ turnovers.

With 2:27 remaining, Selaawy sank a clutch two-pointer to tie the game. On the following possession, Hala ElShaarawy drilled the go-ahead basket, shifting the tide in Egypt’s favor.

A crucial turnover by the Philippines led to a foul on Mohamed with 1:44 left, sealing a 21-19 defeat for Gilas.

Still reeling from the heartbreaking loss, a demoralized Gilas squad faltered in their do-or-die match against Austria, falling 20-13 to crash out of the competition.

Tantoy Ferrer led the scoring against Egypt with eight points, while Sam Harada chipped in seven points and three rebounds.

Against Austria, Lexi Pana stood out with an eight-point performance.

Mohamed powered Egypt with eight points, while ElShaarawy added six. For Austria, Anja Fuchs-Robetin proved unstoppable, scoring 10 points on an efficient 8-of-11 shooting clip.

The Philippines previously finished ninth in the Chengdu opener before improving to seventh place in the Marseille leg last weekend.

Gilas Women will look to regroup and bounce back as they head to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, for the next leg of the series from June 18 to 19.
