Lady Red Lions, Gorayeb-less Lady Stags pick up wins before holiday break

In the final game day of the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament in 2015, the San Beda College Lady Red Lions and the league-leading San Sebastian College – Recoletos Lady Stags earned convincing wins earlier today at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Facing their sworn rivals, the Lady Red Lions unleashed an all-around brilliant effort, keeping the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Lady Knights winless 21-25, 25-15, 25-11, 25-22.

Carelessly feeding CSJL free balls, San Beda quickly drowned in the opening set and could not muster a late comeback. The Ladies from Mendiola, however, adjusted their ball control which resulted in crisper attacks that the Lady Knights could not counter. San Beda decisively dominated the following three sets right from the first point. If not for a late CSJL rally in the fourth frame, the score would have illustrated San Beda’s great play better.

The Lady Red Lions lorded it over their foes through their attacking and serving, out-spiking Letran 45-33 and dishing out 16 aces to the Lady Knights’ three.

Nieza Viray was one of three Bedans to score double-digits, blistering for 18 points off 16 attacks and two aces. Team captain Iris Domingo contributed 15 points, while Daryl Racraquin managed 10 markers and eight excellent digs. No Lady Knight broke double-digits, with Regielyn Cabrera and Mikaela Lopez each going for nine points.

In the year’s final match, the Lady Stags managed to sweep the Jose Rizal University Lady Bombers 25-12, 25-16, 26-24, without head coach Roger Gorayeb who was serving a one-game suspension.

As they have all season, SSC-R leaned mainly on reigning MVP and team captain, Grethcel Soltones who flustered JRU’s vaunted floor defense with thunderous hits. Baste dominated the first two sets and only faced adversity in the third set. JRU played through their middle blockers, causing SSC’s defense to scramble. The Lady Bombers crawled to get first crack at set point, 24-23, but Soltones would not be denied her early vacation. The National Team standout followed a sharp cross-court hit with two consecutive aces to seal the match.

Soltones finished the match with 21 points, which matched JRU’s points off attacks, on an 18/40 attacking clip coupled with three aces. Middle blocker Rosalie Pepito led the Lady Bombers with 11 points while Shola Alvarez pitched in 10.

San Sebastian still sit atop the league with a clean 6-0 record while JRU sit at seventh place at 3-4. SBC earned just their second win in seven matches.
