La Salle secures podium finish in UAAP Women’s Chess after draw with UST


De La Salle University secured at least a third-place finish after surviving a tough encounter against the University of Santo Tomas, settling for a 2–2 draw in Round 11 of the UAAP Season 88 Collegiate Women’s Chess Tournament on Wednesday at the Adamson Gym.

With the draw, La Salle retained the top spot with 15 match points, closely followed by National University in second with 14 match points.

On Board 2, Woman National Master Rinoa Sadey (7/9) notched her seventh point after finding a smothered mate sequence in “panic time” against UST’s Josemier Panol (4.5/10).

On Board 4, Checy Telesforo (4.5/6) traded her rook for a bishop to dominate the long diagonal and gain a two-pawn advantage in the endgame, forcing Nathalie Liscano (1/3) to resign after the 32nd move.

UST’s Jamaica Lagrio (6/10) preserved her four-round unbeaten streak by defeating Woman National Master Francois Magpily (5/9) on Board 1, while Princes Oncita (1.5/3) toppled La Salle’s Heart Padilla (3.5/6) on Board 3 to secure the draw.

Elsewhere, the Lady Bulldogs also concluded Round 11 with a 2–2 draw against the University of the Philippines.

Woman FIDE Master Allaney Doroy (8.5/9) remained undefeated, claiming her eighth win in nine matches with a commanding performance over UP’s Janice Monsales (2/7) on the top board.

Kyla Dalagan (4/6) bounced back from four consecutive draws by defeating Katherine Tundag (0/5) on Board 3.

Meanwhile, Maryss Caldoza (5.5/10) and Margaret Aranzaso (1/3) secured wins for the Diliman-based squad, outplaying Jersey Marticio (6.5/9) and Yana De Vera (2/4) on Boards 2 and 4, respectively.

Adamson University notched its first win of the season, dealing a major blow to Ateneo de Manila University’s podium hopes with a 2.5–1.5 victory.

Robelle de Jesus (4/6) and Lira Placer (2/6) scored full points for Adamson, while Angela San Luis (2.5/9) held her ground for a draw on Board 3 to complete the triumph.

Defending champion Far Eastern University took a bye in Round 11 and remained in third place with 12 match points.
