Poriya Khanzadeh and Morteza Sharifi delivered a lifeline for Iran’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship campaign, orchestrating a thrilling 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-16 comeback over Tunisia on Tuesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
Khanzadeh led the charge with 21 points off 18 kills and three aces, while Sharifi contributed 18 points — 10 spikes, five aces, and three blocks — to power Iran to a crucial 1-1 tie with Tunisia in Pool A.
The win keeps the race wide open for the two tickets to the Round of 16.
Italian head coach Roberto Piazza was quick to turn the focus to Iran’s final pool-stage clash against hosts Alas Pilipinas on Thursday at 5:30 PM.
“I already told the guys right after the final ball — we have to take another step,” Piazza said. “It depends on us and also on the result of the other game [Philippines vs. Egypt], but the first thing is to focus on our team. We have to be quiet but determined.”
Piazza admitted Iran still has work to do after a shaky start, dropping their opener to Egypt and surrendering the first set against Tunisia.
“Two days ago, we weren’t in the perfect mood. Our minds were stressed, under pressure. It’s normal — Iran is ranked higher, Tunisia has nothing to lose. That shouldn’t disturb us,” he said.
“From the second set, we adjusted our mindset, and the team started to play better. Not perfect, but better.”
Ali Hajipour added 14 points, including three blocks, while Mohammad Valizadeh chipped in 12 more as Iran emerged as the highest-ranked Asian team remaining at No.14 following seventh-ranked Japan’s exit.
For Tunisia, Oussama Ben Romdhane and Ali Bongui each scored 14 points, leaving the North African side also at 1-1.
They need a victory in their final game on Thursday at 1:30 PM to stay alive.
