The Dominican Republic endured a tragic loss on their journey home following the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.
On Wednesday, the team announced that Bladimir Regalado, the squad’s physiotherapist during the world tournament, had passed away after suffering a heart attack during their flight back to the Dominican Republic from the Philippines.
“With deep sadness, we report the passing of Bladimir Regalado, the physiotherapist of our National Team, who suffered a heart attack on the flight back from the Philippines, where he had accompanied our team in the FIBA World Cup 2023,” said the team in a statement.
“We are profoundly sorry for this loss and extend our condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones. Bladimir Regalado was a fundamental pillar of the team, dedicated and passionate about his work. May he rest in peace,” the statement continued.
“His contributions and dedication to the world of Dominican basketball will always be remembered. Rest in peace, NBA.”
The Los Quisqueyanos finished the FIBA World Cup in 14th place, two steps higher than their 16th-place finish in 2019. They reached the Round of 16 but suffered two crucial losses that eliminated them from the tournament.
Karl-Anthony Towns, Angel Delgado, and Lester Quinones are among the Dominican Republic players who paid tribute to Regalado on social media.
“This one hurts. My last words to you were ‘I love you’,” said the Minnesota Timberwolves big man.
