For years, men’s volleyball players have worked tirelessly to carve out space in a country where women’s volleyball and men’s basketball often dominate. The talent was there, the passion undeniable — but the spotlight frequently passed them by.
On Friday, that long wait takes a major step forward as the Spikers’ Turf stages its first-ever playdate at the iconic Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, opening the round-robin semifinals of the season-ending Invitational Conference.
For three-time league MVP Jude Garcia, now carrying the torch for local men’s volleyball while Bryan Bagunas and Marck Espejo balance their overseas commitments with league stints, the moment feels almost surreal.
“Ang masasabi ko lang eh sobrang saya at nakaka-excite maglaro, kasi sa UAAP ka lang talaga makakapaglaro sa ganyang kaganda at malaking venue,” he said, recalling the rush of performing under the bright lights of the Big Dome.
Now, he gets to feel it again — this time not as a collegiate standout, but as one of the pillars of a growing movement.
“Ngayon, sa Spikers’ Turf naman, makaka-experience ka ulit. Sobrang laking bagay talaga ito sa men’s volleyball dito sa Philippines. Talagang nakikita mo rin ‘yung full support ng management ng Spikers’ Turf para pataasin pa lalo ang level ng men’s volleyball.”
And it shows. The league has gone all-in, not for spectacle alone, but for the sport’s future. For the players who carry the game on their shoulders. For the fans who have long waited for men’s volleyball to take its rightful place on the main stage.
“Sobrang thank you din sa kanila kasi binibigyan nila kami ng ganitong opportunity,” Garcia added, aware that moments like these are more than milestones — they are turning points.
Even with the league’s commitment, Garcia knows the push cannot succeed without one crucial element: the crowd.
“Sobrang importante talaga ang full support ng volleyball fans sa amin. Kahit saan ka sigurong sports pumunta, talagang fans ang isa sa nagbibigay ng reason para maglaro at mag-perform ka nang maganda every game.”
The Big Dome’s lights won’t shine the same without the people who fill the seats and bring the energy. Garcia is calling on fans to show up and stand with the players as men’s volleyball continues to grow.
On this historic Friday, Criss Cross — the powerhouse led by Garcia — and their fierce rivals, defending champion Cignal, take center stage to headline a rare triple-header. It is a statement in itself that they, too, deserve a place on the country’s grandest stage.
“Kaya ngayon, sana sa lahat ng fans ng volleyball, suportahan n’yo rin po kaming men’s volleyball dito sa Spikers’ Turf para sabay-sabay nating iaangat ang men’s volleyball.”
