Brazilian head coach Jorge Souza de Brito is bidding farewell to Akari after four conferences, as announced by the team on Thursday morning.
De Brito also serves as the head coach of the Philippine women’s national volleyball team.
He was recruited by the Chargers during their inaugural campaign last year.
“Coach Jorge Souza de Brito has submitted his resignation as the head coach of the Akari Chargers, effective December 15, 2023,” stated Akari in an official release.
Akari’s statement continued, “Akari management has accepted Coach Jorge’s resignation and offers our sincerest appreciation, thanking him for his time and service during the four conferences he has served as the head tactician of this young, promising team.
“We wish Coach Jorge the best of luck in his future endeavors.”
Under his guidance, the team achieved back-to-back eighth-place finishes in the 2022 Reinforced Conference and the 2023 First All-Filipino Conference. However, they slipped to 10th place in the Invitational Conference this year.
The 1992 Olympics gold medalist’s most successful season with Akari occurred in the Second All-Filipino Conference. There, he led the team to a 5-6 record, including their first-ever back-to-back victories in franchise history.
Akari eventually secured a seventh-place finish.
However, despite these achievements, the Chargers have failed to qualify for the playoffs in all four conferences.
While Akari has yet to announce De Brito’s replacement, they revealed that more announcements regarding the team’s future direction will be made soon.
“More announcements will follow soon regarding the new direction the Akari Chargers will take moving forward.”
