John Abate ends UE career early due to injury

University of the East guard John Abate announced that his collegiate basketball journey has come to an early end due to a nose injury, bringing a premature close to what could have been a defining season for the 6-foot-1 guard.

Taking to social media, Abate shared a heartfelt message to the UE community, reflecting on the lessons, camaraderie, and growth he experienced during his time with the Red Warriors.

“A warrior is taught to persevere, to fight even when the odds are against him, and to honor the place he calls home,” Abate wrote.

“My journey with UE may have been short, but has left a mark on me that I’ll carry for life… Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for EVERYTHING.”

Abate, who served as team captain, expressed gratitude to his teammates and coaches, emphasizing that leadership was about standing beside his brothers on and off the court.

“The memories, the long practices, the wins and tough losses, and the moments of pure joy are the things I’ll hold onto forever,” he said.

Before joining UE, Abate played for Division II Spring Hill College in the United States.

After moving to the Philippines in 2023, he considered De La Salle University and University of Santo Tomas before ultimately committing to UE.

In his final season with the Red Warriors, Abate averaged 16.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.9 steals in 10 games—a strong showing cut short by injury.

“As my collegiate journey comes to an early end due to injury, I just want to remind you not to take any of it for granted… When the games don’t go your way, remember that you are so much more than basketball players,” Abate wrote.

“This sport is what we do, but it’s not all that we are.”
