When asked if he can rate himself from one to ten for how he has been adjusting with the Alaska Aces, 2017’s fifth overall pick Jeron Teng paused for a few seconds, a bit at a loss.
“Hirap kasi masabi eh,” the La Salle great admitted. “Itong sinasabi ni coach Alex (Compton), itong preseason, di pa kami all out talaga rito. They haven’t really introduced their other plays yet. We’re running with I think one or two plays?
“So marami pa ‘kong catching up to do for sure after this preseason.”
The 23-year-old forward may be struggling to explain himself, but based on the way he was utilized by Compton in this week’s PBA Preseason Games, it is safe to say that he has had no issues whatsoever.
After averaging just four points, two rebounds, and three dimes in their first two outings, Teng exploded for 15 markers in their 110-97 victory over eventual preseason champions Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Wednesday.
“Okay naman ako,” said the athletic six-foot-two wingman. “Kasi I’m getting myself familiar with the plays of Alaska and siyempre with the chemistry of the team. Very big opportunity for learning itong preseason.”
The preseason and the weeks prior to the 43rd season proved to be a glimpse of what Teng can deliver to the storied franchise. But for the two-time UAAP gold medalist, it’s not all about him, but about the Milkmen as a whole.
“We’re here to improve more as a team, and to test where we are right now.”
