Jayson Castro is set to undergo surgery as prognosis to the injury he sustained in Game 2 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals Friday appears gloomy.
TNT team manager Jojo Lastimosa told Tiebreaker Times that the 38-year-old point guard may have suffered a full thickness patellar tendon tear in his right knee, according to the doctors’ assessment of the MRI results.
It will take Castro at least six months to recover from the said injury, meaning that he’d be out for the rest of the season — and perhaps even beyond.
His looming absence could be a massive blow to the Tropang Giga’s semis battle against Rain or Shine, let alone to their title hopes, where they currently hold a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 series following a 93-91 win on Friday.
TNT needed some luck, hacking out the victory as it lost Rondae Hollis-Jefferson to foul trouble, and then their main man due to the knee injury.
Castro appeared to have twisted his right knee at the 3:07-mark of the fourth quarter as he attacked the defense of Gian Mamuyac on the way to the rim.
The 17-year veteran clutched onto his knee and was visibly in pain, and had to be aided on the way out of the playing court by his teammates. He was eventually stretchered out of the venue to be taken to the hospital.
Before going down, Castro had 13 points, five rebounds, and five assists, continuing his solid play from Game 1 that saw him drop 24 points.
