Suits and long-sleeved polos have become the most common choice of attire among the PBA Rookie Draft hopefuls. But Jason Perkins decided to break from the norm and wear something unique: a barong tagalog.
The six-foot-three Filipino-American stood out from his peers who were clad coat-and-tie get-ups, with his cream white barong — a refreshing sight given the fact that wearing the Philippines’ national dress has become rare these days.
“I’ve been working pretty hard at the gym, so I feel like I needed to wear something that shows my curves,” joked the cager known as the Hefty Lefty regarding his choice of clothing.
But more than his eye-catching fashion statement, the two-time PBA D-League champion was among the top attention-drawers in the Draft, as he was the fifth overall pick by the retooling Phoenix Fuel Masters.
“I’m really happy. I’ve been working hard for this for a really long time so finally making it [to the pros], it’s like a big weight off my back. I’m so happy and thankful to be here,” shared the Minnesota-born cager.
Perkins is a good addition to the now-Louie Alas-mentored Fuel Masters, as he has proven his versatility in playing multiple positions. Moreover, he can also help lighten the load that gunner Matthew Wright is carrying, especially on offense.
And with that, Perkins is looking forward to his maiden season in the pro ranks.
“I think we’re gonna do pretty good,” said Perkins, a two-time UAAP gold medalist, “I’ve been watching a lot of games, they’re a great group of guys. [They have] Great shooters. I’m excited to go out there and set screens for them.
“I’m a good teammate so I’ll do whatever the guys need me to do, the dirty work or anything, I’ll do it.”
