Japan stormed past New Zealand with a commanding 6-0 win in the 2025 FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup on Sunday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig, making an early statement in Group C.
The Nadeshiko Five wasted no time asserting their dominance, opening a two-goal lead by halftime thanks to Sara Oino’s quick strike just two minutes in, followed by Anna Ameshiro’s 13th-minute finish.
The second half saw Japan turn up the pressure, rattling in four more goals in a three-minute flurry.
Risa Ikedai struck in the 24th minute before Ryo Egawa and Oino added goals in rapid succession at the 27th minute. Yukari Miyahara capped off the rout in the 32nd minute.
“I’m very happy with the result today, so I think everyone will share the victory from today,” said Japan coach Takehiro Suga.
“I think we are still in a position where we have a lot to do, but I think that by being different, we will continue to receive support from many people, so we will give it our all and aim to be a team that everyone can sympathize with. So please support us.”
Portugal followed Japan’s example, delivering the tournament’s most lopsided result so far with a 10-0 demolition of 82nd-ranked Tanzania.
The European powerhouse featured 10 different goalscorers, with Maria Pereira opening the floodgates in the fourth minute.
Ana Azevedo (6’), Kaka (7’), Ines Matos (12’), Fifó (14’), and Kika all added goals in the first half to give the Selecção das Quinas a commanding lead.
The second half saw the Twiga Stars’ woes continue.
Fatuma Issa’s own goal in the 21st minute made it 7-0 before Helena Nunes (21’), Lidia Moreira (24’), and Carolina Pedreira (32’) completed Portugal’s emphatic victory.
“It went well, now it’s time to think about the next one,” said Portugal coach Luis Conceicao.
“I would also like to say a word of appreciation to teams such as Tanzania, for the effort they make to be here, to be present at the World Cup. May this be an experience for them to learn, to grow, and may women’s futsal in their country continue to grow.”
With the wins, Portugal and Japan top Group C with three points each, Portugal claiming first place on a superior plus-10 goal difference over Japan’s plus-6.
New Zealand and Tanzania sit third and fourth, respectively.
All four teams return to action on Wednesday, with New Zealand facing Tanzania at 1 p.m., followed by the highly anticipated Portugal vs. Japan clash at 3:30 p.m.
