After recovering from a significant injury, Hamed Haddadi will strive to carry the aspirations of young Iran in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, aiming to secure their spot in the Paris Olympics as the highest-finishing Asian team.
The journey ahead won’t be without challenges, as Haddadi will be without his longtime partner, prolific scorer Samad Nikkah Barahmi, in the upcoming tournament.
Despite Bahrami’s absence, head coach Hakan Demir believes that Iran’s World Cup roster comprises players who possess the necessary skills to compete effectively against the world’s finest.
“We have transitioned some generations within the team, connecting experienced players like Hamed with our youthful group. They dedicated two and a half months to rigorous training while playing preparation games. We will undoubtedly step onto the court, giving our utmost in pursuit of our best possible performance,” said Demir.
The 38-year-old center, making his fourth World Cup appearance, recuperated from a ruptured Achilles tendon sustained back in January in China. He persevered to regain his form, leading this young Iranian team and passing the torch to the next generation.
“I underwent significant surgery on my Achilles (heel) around eight months ago. I invested substantial effort to return to the court… I believe this will be my final World Cup, you know.
“I’m genuinely eager to contribute positively to my team, Iran. Additionally, I aim to support my teammates and young players. I also require their assistance. I’m thrilled to be present here, participating in the World Cup,” shared Haddadi with members of the media.
In 2019, Haddadi and Bahrami spearheaded Team Melli to a 2-3 record in the World Cup, finishing 23rd overall and securing a berth at the 2020 Olympics in Japan as the highest-placed Asian team. China ended 24th, while the Philippines finished last at 32nd.
Haddadi and his team will face their first challenge against Brazil in their opener on Saturday (August 26), a team that defeated them 79-50 in the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
“That match was a formidable test for us. Now, both teams have undergone generational shifts and have introduced young players… I anticipate an engaging match for both sides,” commented Haddadi on their rematch against Brazil.
Iran is also slated to confront Spain and Ivory Coast in their remaining group stage matches, with the top two teams advancing to the second round.
