Greg Slaughter waiting for Ginebra call: ‘I’m recharged, ready to go’

Greg Slaughter is looking forward to discussing matters with Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, now that he’s back in town following a months-long sabbatical.

The 7-foot slotman told Power and Play Saturday that he is just waiting for team management to set up a date for them to talk things over.

“I’m just waiting on Ginebra to set a firm date with me so we can have a meeting and talk,” he told the program hosted by former PBA commissioner Noli Eala.

Slaughter has yet to speak with the team’s top brass since announcing last February that he is taking a break following the expiration of his contract.

Asked for the reasons behind the shocking decision, the 32-year-old said that he felt it was the right time for him to “rediscover” himself.

“I thought it was a good time to take time for myself to kinda rediscover myself. Rediscover what kind of player I was, work on the things that I needed to do.”

Slaughter feels grateful he had that chance that while in the United States, where he spent the last seven months working on his game.

He trained with veteran NBA scout Gary Boyson at the DME Sports Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida.

“And now that I have had all this great training, you know, I’m recharged, I’m ready to go, mentally and physically refreshed,” he said.

Boyson did not just help Slaughter on the court. The big man also credited Boyson for his signing with the biggest basketball agency, BeoBasket.

Owned by Misko Raznatovic, a Serbian lawyer and sports agent, the agency represents several European stars such as Nikola Jokic and Dario Saric.

“He gave word to them that he’s training me, so for three months they’ve been watching my progress,” he recalled. “All this time I was totally unaware that they were monitoring me. Gary was sending them updates regarding my progress. And after three months they saw the progress that I made.

“I was happy to hear that they were impressed by that, and that’s what led them to sign me up.”

Now that he’s with BeoBasket, Slaughter said that playing overseas is a possibility, sharing that there are teams abroad interested in his services.

However, before he makes any decision, the cager from Cebu still wants to speak with Ginebra first.

“I’m open to all possibilities. My level of play has elevated. There has been also interest from other teams abroad, but at the moment, you know, with respect to Ginebra, and all the experiences we’ve been through, I’d definitely love to talk to them before I make any final decisions,” Slaughter said.

“As of the moment, I’m just waiting to meet with them.”
