Gilas Women exit early in challenging FIBA 3×3 WS European debut

Gilas Pilipinas Women 3×3 learned valuable lessons in their first FIBA 3×3 foray in Europe.

The Philippines went 0-2 in the 2024 FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series stop in Clermont-Ferrand, falling to Azerbaijan 22-17 (6:50).

They were overwhelmed by powerhouse Netherlands, 21-5 (7:09), resulting in an early exit on early Saturday morning (Manila time).

Unlike the Ulaanbaatar leg of the WS last week – which saw three teams from the two pools advance to the knockout stage – the leg in Clermont-Ferrand had a regular 3×3 format with the top two teams in each of the four pools advancing to the playoffs.

A balanced Gilas attack gave the Philippines a chance against Azerbaijan.

However, with the game knotted at 14-all, Azerbaijan started to pull away.

Alexandra Mollenhauer and Marcedes Walker took charge, powering their side to an 8-2 blitz, capped by a Mollenhauer deuce with 3:10 remaining.

The Netherlands’ size proved to be too much in the second game, starting with a 7-0 surge from which the Uratex-backed Filipinas could not recover.

In the first game, Allana Lim led the way with five points, while the trio of Kaye Pingol, Hazelle Yam, and Sam Harada each scored four points.

Julia Jorritsma was a handful for Gilas in the second game, dropping 10 points.

The Netherlands ended up as the top team in the group, blowing out Azerbaijan, 21-12.

The Scores:

Pool D 1
Azerbaijan 22 – Walker 7, Mollenhauer 6, Ulyanova 6, Deniskina 3.

Pool D 3
