Gilas Women’s OQT hopes end at South Korea’s hands


The Olympic dreams of Gilas Pilipinas Women’s came to an abrupt end after suffering a 75-114 rout to South Korea, Saturday at the Trusts Arena in Auckland, New Zealand.

The Philippines fell to 0-2 in Group A of the 2019 FIBA Women’s Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Only the top two teams in the pool will advance to the OQT proper next year.

And it was a rout right from the get-go.

After an opening trey by Janine Pontejos, the Koreans went on a 22-0 blitz to gain control of the game.

Overall, South Korea knocked down a total of 21 triples in the game, while going on a 50-percent clip from the field.

South Korea led by as much as 45 points in the contest, 114-69, with 1:30 left.

Afril Bernardino and Pontejos were once again the bright spots for the Philippines. The former tallying 19 points, eight rebounds, and two steals, while the latter chipped in 17 points built on three triples.

Kang Leeseul had 16 points to lead the 2-0 South Korea, while Shin Jihyun had 15 markers.

Quarterscores: 12-34, 33-63, 48-91, 75-114.
